Hi, I’m Dallas and I’ve lived and worked in the area for many years, and on a sporting front was a competitive Triathlete and was involved in the establishment and running of the Lake Macquarie Triathlon Club in the late 90s. Around the mid-2000s I also joined the Hunter Mountain Bike Club which had just taken a lease on the site of the Awaba Mountain Park. I have been involved in the development of the park for some time now.

In early 2003 I started Breakaway Cycles in a tiny shop just up the street from our current location, and as well as working my old job partially, kicked off the business with help from family and friends. My background as a Motor Mechanic has been a huge help in running a bicycle store, as the industry is geared around repairs and maintenance in my view.

I see the cycling world becoming more and more a part of urban life in Australia in part thanks to the E-Bike technology that has crept into the market. More people are realizing they could do without a second car to get about around town, and given we are seeing (finally) some real pathways in this area, the ease of commuting to the railway station or local job has become viable by bike. As I’ve said always, this area has it all to offer in outdoor activities and recreation, with endless riding opportunities for young and old.

I started the business in March 2003 and opened a tiny shop just up from our current location. In 2007 we moved into the current location that used to be the Surf / Sports Store for many years in the town.

Coming from a mechanical background, we have always had a focus on servicing and spares supplies, as well as keeping a very substantial range of accessories. We offer old-school services such as lay-bys, and personal advice based on industry experience, not some influencer!

E-bikes are becoming more and more popular, but there are many challenges associated with them, so servicing becomes even more important to ensure the longevity of the bike. We keep various models of E bikes from folding 20″ wheel bikes to serious off-road E Mountain Bikes. We have always endeavoured to carry a large variety of kids bikes to ensure each child’s requirements are met. Our aim is to always try and make parents understand the importance of a good quality bike for kids so they like to go out and use it.

Another important area we focus on is having an extensive range of good helmets as the importance of a well fitting helmet is paramount, so we keep at least 3 brands to give the best fitting option for different head shapes..
